How to Clean Your Oven, Including Racks and Door Glass

An oven can look tidy from the outside while grease and cooking residue build up inside. Before tackling it, identify the appliance and the cleaning methods it allows.

The short answer

The safest starting point is the oven’s instruction manual. Let the appliance cool, follow its preparation instructions and use products approved for its surfaces. Conventional enamel, specialist liners and self-cleaning systems can require different care.

Identify your oven’s cleaning system

Check the model number and manual for information about the cavity, liners, racks, seals and door glass.

A self-cleaning feature does not mean every accessory should remain inside during a cycle. For example, NEFF instructs users to remove racks and accessories before the cleaning process described in its guide. Follow the directions for your own model.

Prepare the area

Give the oven time to cool and follow the manual’s instructions regarding the power supply.

Protect surrounding cabinetry and flooring as directed by the cleaning product. Ventilate the room and use the protective equipment specified on the label.

Keep children and pets away from the work area. Never mix cleaning products. Remove only the parts the manufacturer identifies as removable for cleaning.

Clean the oven interior

Use an approved method for each surface rather than spraying every part of the cavity indiscriminately.

Specialist liners, heating elements, fans, seals and vents may need different treatment or must be avoided. Respect the product’s application time and removal instructions.

Do not turn scraping into a test of force. If residue is not lifting with the permitted method, seek advice before damaging the finish.

How to clean oven racks

Check whether the racks have coatings, fittings or telescopic mechanisms requiring specific care.

Follow the approved soaking or manual cleaning method where permitted. Avoid assuming that a self-cleaning cycle will safely clean them; NEFF specifically cautions that its oven cleaning programmes are not designed to clean racks.

How to clean oven door glass

Clean accessible glass using the method specified for the appliance.

If dirt is between the panes, do not improvise a way to remove the door or glass. Some models allow disassembly, but the process is model-specific. NEFF’s guide directs owners to their instruction manual for the relevant steps.

Common questions

Can I use the same cleaner throughout the oven?

Only if it is approved for every surface involved. Check both the product label and appliance instructions.

Will cleaning repair damaged enamel or glass?

No. Cracks, damaged coatings and faulty components require a separate assessment.
