Start by identifying the paving, checking its care instructions and inspecting the joints. Sweep away loose debris before choosing a suitable cleaning product or pressure-washing method. Porcelain, concrete and natural stone should not automatically receive the same treatment.
Inspect before you clean
Look for loose slabs, cracked surfaces, missing jointing and areas where water collects. Cleaning may reveal these problems more clearly, but it will not repair them. A damaged patio may need attention before mechanical cleaning is appropriate.
If you do not know the paving material, check installation records or ask the supplier. Colour alone is not a reliable guide.
Begin with loose dirt and debris
Move pots and furniture where practical, then sweep away leaves and loose material with a suitable brush.
Check the area around doors, drains and planted borders before introducing water or cleaning products. Follow product instructions for protecting surrounding surfaces and managing runoff.
A routine clean may need less intervention than a heavily stained or neglected area.
Can you clean patio slabs without a pressure washer?
Yes, where the paving manufacturer permits it, a suitable cleaner and brush may be an option.
Choose a product approved for the actual surface and follow the dilution, application and rinsing instructions. Test a small unobtrusive area first.
Do not assume that an acidic cleaner is suitable for stone. Marshalls warns that common acid-based patio products are inappropriate for many of its paving materials.

When pressure washing needs care
Pressure washing is not automatically the best choice for every patio. The material, surface condition and jointing determine what is suitable.
Follow the paving and equipment manufacturers’ instructions rather than starting at maximum pressure. Excessive force can damage surfaces or dislodge jointing. If the paving is already unstable, seek advice before proceeding.

What about persistent marks?
Describe the problem before choosing a treatment: green growth, rust, oil and dark spotting are not interchangeable.
Take photographs and note previous cleaning attempts. Applying several products in succession can make assessment harder and may damage the paving.
Common questions
Will cleaning make old paving look new?
Results depend on the material and its condition. Cleaning does not reverse wear, fading or physical damage.
How often should a patio be cleaned?
Use its condition as a guide. Shade, nearby plants, drainage and use all affect how quickly debris and soiling build up.
