How to Clean a Fabric Sofa Without Damaging the Upholstery

A beautifully chosen sofa is often the centre of a living room. Caring for it starts with understanding the fabric—not reaching for the strongest cleaning product.

The short answer

To clean a fabric sofa, check the manufacturer’s instructions, remove loose dirt gently and use only a method approved for that upholstery. Not every fabric tolerates water, steam or extraction cleaning.

Check the care instructions first

Look beneath the cushions or under the furniture for a care label. Some upholstery uses these codes:

Common upholstery cleaning codes
CodeGeneral meaning
WWater-based upholstery products may be suitable.
SSolvent-based cleaning is specified.
W/SEither category may be suitable, subject to the instructions.
XVacuuming or brushing only; seek specialist advice for stains.

A “W” does not mean the sofa can be soaked, and a removable cover is not necessarily machine washable. Follow the furniture manufacturer’s instructions over generic cleaning advice. If the label is missing, identify the fabric with the retailer or manufacturer before proceeding.

Remove loose dirt before treating marks

Use a suitable upholstery attachment and gentle suction, following the care instructions. Work across the seat, back and accessible creases.

Remove cushions only where they are designed to lift out. Take care around piping, loose threads and decorative trims.

This is also a useful moment to inspect the sofa. Note whether a mark is a spill, worn fabric, fading or a change in the pile. Cleaning will not reverse every change in appearance.

Deal with a fresh spill carefully

Lift away loose solids gently. For liquid, use a clean white absorbent cloth to blot rather than scrub.

Before using any approved cleaner, test it in an inconspicuous area and allow that area to dry fully. Check for colour transfer, a ring, texture changes or other damage.

Use the product exactly as directed. Adding more liquid or detergent does not necessarily improve the result.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating an unknown fabric with a homemade mixture.
  • Scrubbing one spot until the texture changes.
  • Assuming every upholstery fabric is suitable for steam.
  • Washing removable covers without checking the label.
  • Sitting on cushions before they have dried fully.

When is professional cleaning worth considering?

Consider professional advice for larger stained areas, delicate upholstery, persistent odours or a sofa with an unknown cleaning history.

Share photographs, the care label and details of any products already used. That information is more useful than a promise that a particular stain “should come out”.

Common questions

How long will a sofa take to dry?

There is no single reliable time for every sofa. Fabric, filling, cleaning method, moisture and ventilation all affect drying.

Can every stain be removed?

No. Some marks involve permanent colour change or damage. Assessment should come before any promise.
